December 2011 - Although the last few months have seen some easing in the cost of Rare Earth ores, production quotas imposed by the Chinese Government continue to cause huge cost increases and supply restrictions for Rare Earth magnets - especially Neodymium and Dysprosiuym based materials. The cost differential between NdFeB and SmCo magnets has narrowed considerably, and where possible customers are attempting to design Rare Earth magnets out, substituting Ceramic magnets, or in some cases, eliminating magnets altogether - for example in some alternator applications.
Some suppliers in China have begun to require payments in advance, and prices for NdFeB magnets are sometimes not fixed until time of shipment, creating a very difficult situtaiton for the entire supply chain.
